20/02: Watch Out for Scam Artists Trying to Get Your New Economic Stimulus Payments

There are nearly 55 million retirees that could fall prey to scam artists. Under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act signed into law on February 17, 2009 by President Obama, recipients of Supplemental Income, Social Security Disability Insurance, Veterans pension, Railroad Retirement, or State retirement will get a one-time payment of $250.

Personal information is not required to be divulged in order to receive the payment. If you get a call asking for your personal information such as your social security number or bank account number reciprocate the inquiry by asking the caller for their information and/or for a phone number at which you can return their call. Those entitled are expected to receive their payments by late May 2009. No action is required on the part of a potential recipient to receive the payment.

Dear Jillie:

I do not know if your aunt is entitled to the payment, but she will get it if she is entitled and she does not have to do a thing.

Help please. I was asked by my aunt to file her taxes. She recieves her own social security, and she recieves an allotment. The allotment is from her late husband's retirement/pension from when he was in the Air Force.

This is the only income she recieves at all.

Is she entitled to this economic stimulus payment?
