Marriage is codified in Chapter 551 of the Michigan Compiled Laws. See Chapter 551 Marriage. In Michigan, a teenager must be at least 16 to become emancipated (see MCL 722.4c(2)(b)) and at least 16 to get married (see MCL 551.51).MCL 551.51 specifically voids any marriage entered into by a person who is under age 16. The teenager must also have the written consent of a parent or legal guardian. The consent must be to the marriage and to the issuing of the license for which the application is submitted; and must be given personally in the presence of the county clerk or before a notary public or other officer authorized to administer oaths.
